Home cooking is becoming increasingly undervalued and decreasingly common. In our modern fast paced world people are eating out more than ever. This is a mini tragedy because cooking your own food, among other important reasons, is one of the prerequisites of a healthy diet. According to a study conducted by the company June, “Nearly three quarters of the respondents said they grew up eating dinner at the table, while today fewer than half do; almost a third take most of their meals on the couch.”1 This and several other studies have shone light on a number of concerning statistics:

Only 10% of Americans say they take any enjoyment in cooking
Nearly one third of Americans do not know how to cook2
Up to 40% of the US food supply is wasted (much of which is from restaurants)3
2022 saw an all-time high in average spending on dining out in the United States4
From a health standpoint, one of the biggest issues related to eating out is the ingredients most commonly used. Another issue stemming from a decline in home cooking is the rise in obesity. The opposing trends evident in these two areas are not a coincidence. Permanent weight loss is simply not realistic unless you take charge of your own daily food prep. Restaurants want indulgent repeat customers, not picky health advocates. Of course they are going to serve you high calorie dishes drowning in oil and salt. It is wishful thinking to assume that eating out regularly is conducive to maintaining a lifelong healthy weight. No one is going to care about your health more than you.
