GMOs: What They Are, Why They're Dangerous, And How To Avoid Them
Today’s Topic Highlights:
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are in the vast majority of processed foods and conventionally farmed animal products.
More than 95% of all corn, soy, canola, cottonseed and sugar beet crops grown in the United States are genetically modified.
Several peer reviewed studies have shown that mice being fed GMO soy and corn experience liver damage, kidney failure, cancer, infertility, and immune system suppression.
Monsanto is the largest developer of GMO seeds. They are the same brainchild behind Round Up, Agent Orange, aspartame, recombinant bovine growth hormone in milk (rBGH), PCBs, and DDT.
The best ways to avoid GMOs are to shop for non-GMO products in the grocery store, stick with pasture raised meats, and avoiding eating out.
Do you eat genetically modified food? Most people answer this question with “No”, “I don’t think so”, or “I have no idea”. The unfortunate reality is that you do. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are in virtually everything we consume. These fake foods have surreptitiously enveloped our entire food system. And it is not an accident that very few people are aware of this.
On the FDA’s own website they admit that “It is very likely you are eating foods and food products that are made with ingredients that come from GMO crops.”1 That is because the vast majority of processed foods in the US contain GMO ingredients. More than 95% of all corn, soy, canola, cottonseed, and sugar crops (specifically from sugar beets) grown in the United States are genetically modified.
What They Are
GMOs are organisms whose genetic material (DNA) has been manipulated through laboratory engineering in a way that overrides natural barriers in an effort to create favorable traits. GMOs include crops like Bt corn which is engineered to produce its own toxic insecticide, similar to the way humans produce their own sweat. Another example is Round Up Ready soybeans which are engineered to withstand endless applications of Round Up herbicide.
It is equally important to understand what GMOs are not. They are NOT a form of selective breeding within a species. An example of that would be seedless watermelons. GMOs are experimental assaults on the basic laws governing biology, with independently verified health consequences in mammals who consume them. The resulting structural damage to DNA causes violent reactions in the digestive and immune systems.
Why They Are Dangerous
Several peer reviewed studies have shown that mice being fed GMO soy and corn experience liver damage, kidney failure, cancer, infertility, and immune system suppression. A 2014 study published in Food and Chemical Toxicology found that GMO maize fed to rats disrupted their endocrine system, caused reproductive problems, and produced large cancerous tumors. The picture below speaks for itself.
The company responsible for producing the majority of genetically modified food is Monsanto. This chemical company has a long and evil history. It is important to highlight this so that you understand who is behind GMO food technology. Monsanto is the same brainchild behind Agent Orange, recombinant bovine growth hormone in milk (rBGH), PCBs, DDT, aspartame, and Round Up. Most of these former cash cow chemicals have been officially banned. Monsanto has also been forced to pay billions of dollars in lawsuits over the last several years alone for the cancer causing effects of Round Up, with thousands of other cases still pending.2
How To Avoid Them
GMO ingredients are not explicitly labelled on food or beverage products. The companies producing these chemically altered crop seeds have gone out of their way to lobby and coerce the federal government into maintaining secrecy of their product presence. The simplest way to avoid them is to stay away from all products containing soy, corn, canola, cottonseed, and sugar.
The bottom line is this - you must assume absolute control over your food and beverage consumption. Like it or not, you’re own your own when it comes to GMOs. Any careless assumptions you make will likely come back to haunt you in this domain. Below are the 4 most effective ways to avoid GMOs and ultimately protect your health.
