The common assumption that expensive exercise equipment is required for losing weight or building muscle is false. This belief is a byproduct of relentless mass marketing by the fitness industry over many decades. The truth is, you do not need a treadmill. You do not need an elliptical. You do not need a Peloton, rowing machine, or any other expensive piece of soon-to-be dust collecting machinery. You can build a highly effective home gym for cheap, and this article you will teach you how to do it.

Every few years a new piece of headline catching exercise equipment takes over the fitness scene. In the early days it was treadmills and Stairmasters. Then came the Bowflex and Ab rollers. Today it’s the Peloton and Mirror. Some of these can certainly be useful and beneficial. Other fitness fads, like the Shake Weight, are just a silly waste of money. But regardless of their popularity or utility, none of them are absolutely necessary for getting into better shape.

There is absolutely no reason, certainly none predicated on necessity, to buy some fancy piece of expensive exercise equipment. Think of the following individuals for a moment. Marines. Dancers. Navy Seals. Gymnasts. Parkour runners. Sprinters. All of them are in tip top shape. Yet the majority of their training involves little to no equipment at all. And unlike popular machines that are heavy and immobile, whatever equipment they do use is typically low cost and portable.

Think of all the things you used to do as a kid. Chances are you were in far better shape back then as a youngster. The games you played and things you did outside, which often required nothing but an imagination, kept you physically fit and healthy. You can reclaim that essence. Perceive the world around you as your own personal playground or gym. The possibilities are endless. A creative mind combined with a willingness to move will open far more doors than anything the fitness industry can sell you.

I am not trying to demonize fitness equipment manufacturers by saying all of this. Many of them are running legitimate businesses with (mostly) legitimate products. But the point here is that you don’t absolutely need them. And those companies go out of their way to make it seem as though you do.

Hopefully by this point you are beginning to view exercise through a new lens. Now let’s talk about what kind of equipment you do need to make an effective home gym.
